What is Aikido?
Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba. On a purely physical level it is an art involving some throws and joint locks that are derived from Jujitsu and some throws and other techniques derived from Kenjutsu. Aikido focuses not on punching or kicking opponents, but rather on using their own energy to gain control of them or to throw them away from you. It is not a static art, but places great emphasis on motion and the dynamics of movement. (see here for more )

How is Aikido practised?
|
What is a Dojo?
Lit. “way place”. It is the location where we practice Aikido. It can also refer to the group!
|
What should I pay attention to in the Dojo?
Take off your shoes ...
|
What are the physical preconditions to start training?
You need to be in ok, but not great shape.
Aikido
is very much based on methods of channeling an opponent’s
energy as opposed to directly trying to oppose his energy. For
that reason you do not need to be stronger, or even faster, than
your opponent. On the other hand if you start to have heart
palpitations when you get up to change the channel on the TV, you
might want to consider starting with Qigong.
|
Aikido
for self defense?
Yes,
Aikido can be a very effective form of self-defense. However, it
can take considerable time and effort before Aikido (or any
martial art) can be used effectively in a self-defense situation.
|
Is
Aikido also suited for women?
The
answer is in very simple terms is yes. And
while any martial art can be practiced by women, the fact that
Aikido is in many ways based on channeling an opponents energy, it
puts women on a much more equal footing with men. Many women might
find it easier at the beginning than they would with another
martial art.
|
Is
there an age limit to starting Aikido?
Not
really. Someone should be in decent physical condition. But the
nature of the practice is that it is very possible to start
training at a later age. The founder, Morihei Ueshiba, practiced
until a very advanced age.
|
What
should I bring to training?
For
the first day it suffices to show up in comfortable clothing, such
as a sweat shirt and sweat pants. When you start practicing
regularly you will want to get a standard Judo outfit consisting
of a shirt and pants for training which is readily available.
Please ask us and we can recommend the best place to buy one.
|
Could
I come by to check it out?
Please
do. The schedule is usually current, but you might want to give us
a call before you come down just to make sure we are meeting on a
particular night.
